The 802.11ac standard uses 5GHz multi-user MIMO and 256 QAM. This technology can help it reach gigabits per second under the conditions of 80MHz bandwidth and at least three antennas within the existing Wi-Fi transmission range.

"It will be a big gimmick-we will try our best to build it," McFarland said.

The 60GHz 802.11ad standard can support channels up to 7Gbits / s or even wider, but due to the difficulty of signal propagation at 60GHz, it can only be restricted to one room.

802.11ac products will eventually replace 802.11n products. He said that 60GHz products will open up new applications, such as high-speed video transmission in a room.

"We feel that these two systems are very different and do not really compete with each other," he added. Eventually, many modules will support both standards.

At the ISSCC meeting in January, engineers debated the advantages and disadvantages of 5GHz and 60GHz. Some representatives pointed out that China does not have the 80MHz band required for 802.11ac 5GHz to transmit Gigabit data.

In addition, McFarland said that Qualcomm has led other companies to launch ARM processor products that support Windows 8.

Atheros has long provided PC manufacturers with Wi-Fi chips, and mobile phone chip manufacturers will become a new customer base for them.
